Black Lake of Lura, Diber, Albania, Europe
The Black Lake (Liqeni i Zi) is a glacial lake located within the Lura National Park in the Dibër County of northeastern Albania. It sits at an elevation of approximately 1,720 meters on the eastern slope of the Kunora e Lurës mountain range.
Visual Characteristics
The lake covers a surface area of approximately 8 hectares and reaches depths of up to 20 meters. Its water appears dark indigo to black due to the depth and the dense surrounding forest of black pine (Pinus nigra) and beech trees. The shoreline is characterized by jagged glacial rock formations and a high density of coniferous vegetation that reflects off the water surface.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is via the SH36 highway from Rrëshen or Burrel to the village of Fushë-Lurë. From the village, a 10-kilometer unpaved mountain track requires a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle to reach the lake basin. There is no designated parking lot; vehicles utilize flat clearings near the water’s edge. No public bus lines service the lake directly.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lake is of glacial origin, formed during the Quaternary period by the erosive action of glaciers on the eastern slopes of the Lura mountains. It is part of a complex of 12 glacial lakes, classified as a protected national park area since 1966 to preserve its unique alpine ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking is the primary activity, with marked trails connecting the Black Lake to the Great Lake and Lake of Flowers. Camping is permitted in clearing areas. Swimming occurs in summer months, though water temperatures remain below 15°C. Observation of local flora, specifically the white water lilies (Nymphaea alba), is possible in early summer.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There is no electricity, piped water, or permanent restroom facilities at the lake. Cellular signal is intermittent, with 4G available only on higher ridges overlooking the basin. No food vendors operate on-site; visitors must carry all supplies from Fushë-Lurë. Natural shade is abundant under the pine canopy.
Best Time to Visit
The optimal period for visiting is June through September. During winter (November–April), the access track is typically impassable due to heavy snow accumulation. Photography is best during the "golden hour" before sunset when the sun clears the Kunora e Lurës peaks, illuminating the dark water.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests the waters of the Black Lake possess curative properties for skin ailments, leading to a traditional practice where locals bathe in the lake during the summer solstice. A verified geological oddity is the lake's consistent water level, maintained by underground icy springs that prevent significant evaporation during dry months.
