White Lake of Lura, Diber, Albania, Europe
The White Lake (Liqeni i Bardhë) is a high-altitude glacial lake situated within the Lura National Park in the Dibër region of Albania. It is positioned on the eastern slopes of the Lura mountain range, north of the Black Lake.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is distinguished by its clear, shallow waters and a bed composed of light-colored glacial sediment and limestone rocks, which give the water a bright, reflective appearance. It is surrounded by sparse alpine vegetation and stands of Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii). The lake is smaller in surface area compared to the Great Lake and features a rocky, uneven shoreline.
Location & Access Logistics
Access requires a 4x4 vehicle via the unpaved mountain road originating in Fushë-Lurë. The track is rugged and steep, following the interior ridges of the national park. There are no public transport services; visitors typically arrive by private off-road vehicle or on foot from the lower lake clusters. Parking is informal on the rocky plateaus surrounding the lake.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The White Lake is a glacial cirque lake formed by the retreat of glaciers during the last ice age. It sits on a bed of carbonate rock, which influences its chemical composition and clarity. It has been a part of the protected Lura National Park since its establishment in 1966.
Key Highlights & Activities
Trekking between the different glacial lakes is the primary activity, with a trail connecting the White Lake to the Lake of Flowers. Landscape photography is common due to the high-contrast limestone environment. Rare alpine plants can be observed in the surrounding meadows during the short growing season.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site has no infrastructure, including a lack of restrooms, trash bins, or designated campsites. There is no potable water source or food service. Cellular signal is extremely weak or non-existent in the lake basin, occasionally accessible only from the surrounding peaks.
Best Time to Visit
The lake is accessible only from late May to early October. For the remainder of the year, snow renders the mountain tracks impassable. Midday provides the best lighting to observe the white lakebed through the clear water. July and August offer the most stable weather conditions for high-altitude hiking.
Facts & Legends
The lake is named "White" as a direct contrast to the nearby Black Lake, representing the local binary classification of the mountain's waters based on clarity and depth. A local tip for visitors is to look for the "glacial flour"-fine rock particles suspended in the water-which contributes to the lake's unique optical properties during periods of high snowmelt.
