Bushkill Falls is a series of eight waterfalls located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. It is a privately owned park accessible to the public.

Visual Characteristics

The falls descend over granite cliffs. The primary waterfall, known as the Main Falls, drops approximately 100 feet. Other falls range from 20 to 80 feet in height. The surrounding area is characterized by dense deciduous forest, with trails winding through rocky terrain and alongside streams.

Location & Access Logistics

Bushkill Falls is located approximately 25 miles northwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Access is via Bushkill Falls Road (State Route 402). The park entrance is clearly marked. Ample parking is available on-site for a fee. No public transportation directly serves the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The geological formation of the Pocono Mountains, including the bedrock over which Bushkill Falls flows, dates back to the Devonian period, approximately 360-400 million years ago. The falls are a result of erosion acting upon these ancient rock layers. The area has been a tourist attraction since the early 20th century.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk the network of trails to view the various waterfalls. The park offers multiple hiking paths, including the "Green Trail" (1.5 miles, moderate difficulty), the "Blue Trail" (2 miles, moderate to difficult), and the "Yellow Trail" (0.5 miles, easy). Observation decks provide vantage points for photography. Kayaking and fishing are not permitted within the park.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the main lodge. Limited shaded areas are present along some trails. Cell phone signal is inconsistent within the park, particularly in deeper sections of the trails. A gift shop and snack bar are located at the park entrance. No food vendors are present on the trails.

Best Time to Visit

The park is typically open from April through October. The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid direct overhead sunlight. Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and autumn foliage, respectively. Water flow is highest after periods of significant rainfall.

Facts & Legends

Local Lenape folklore tells of a maiden named Bushkill who, heartbroken, threw herself from the highest falls. The park's trails are designed to showcase the natural beauty with minimal environmental impact, utilizing boardwalks and stone steps in sensitive areas.
