This natural inlet features a sandy beach approximately 150 meters in length and 40 meters wide, flanked by limestone cliffs reaching up to 50 meters in height. The water clarity is high, with a sandy seabed extending to approximately 10 meters depth before transitioning to rock. Vegetation on the cliff tops consists primarily of Mediterranean scrub and pine trees.
Location & Access Logistics
Cala en Porter is located 10 kilometers south of Alaior. Access is via the Me-12 road, turning onto the Camí de Cala en Porter. The road leads directly to a paid parking area with capacity for approximately 200 vehicles. Public transport is available via the TMSA bus line 34, which stops at the entrance to the cove. The nearest airport, Menorca Airport (MAH), is 12 kilometers west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The cove is a natural erosion feature, a ria formed by the sea encroaching into the limestone bedrock. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the nearby Cova d'en Xoroi being a significant archaeological site dating back to the Neolithic period.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming and sunbathing are primary activities. Snorkeling is possible along the rocky sections of the cove. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available during the summer season. Access to the Cova d'en Xoroi, a cave bar and viewpoint, is located on the western cliff face.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available near the beach access. Shade is provided by natural cliff overhangs and rented umbrellas. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally good. Several beach bars and restaurants operate directly on or adjacent to the sand.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers optimal lighting on the cliffs. The months of June, July, and September provide warm weather suitable for beach activities. High tide is not a significant factor for beach access.
Facts & Legends
The Cova d'en Xoroi is reputedly named after a pirate who sought refuge in the cave with a local woman. Legend states he lived there for years, surviving on supplies stolen from passing ships, until he was discovered and jumped to his death from the cliff to avoid capture.
