Cova d’en Xoroi, Alaior, Balearic Islands, Europe
Cova d’en Xoroi is a cave complex situated on the southern coast of Menorca, within the municipality of Alaior.
Visual Characteristics
The cave entrance is a fissure in a limestone cliff face. The interior consists of natural caverns and terraces carved into the rock. The cliff is approximately 50 meters high. The sea below is typically a deep blue, with lighter turquoise hues closer to the shore.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located 8 kilometers south of Alaior. Access is via the Me-12 road, turning onto the Camí de Sa Cova d’en Xoroi. Parking is available on-site, with a fee typically charged during peak season. Public transport options are limited; bus line L15 stops approximately 2 kilometers from the entrance, requiring a walk.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The cave is a natural geological formation, a result of karstic erosion over millennia. Local legend attributes its name to a supposed 16th-century hermit named Xoroi who lived in the caves. The terraces and bar structures are modern additions.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the coastal landscape from the terraces. Consumption of beverages at the bar. Photography of the sunset from the western-facing viewpoints. Access to the cave interior is primarily for the bar and viewing areas.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the complex. Limited shaded areas are provided by awnings and umbrellas on the terraces. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food and beverages are sold on-site. No significant food vendors are located immediately outside the complex.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the hour before sunset offers direct sunlight on the cliffs. The months of May, June, September, and October provide pleasant temperatures. High tide can affect the visibility of submerged rocks at the base of the cliffs.
Facts & Legends
A local legend states that Xoroi, a shipwrecked Moor, lived in the cave with his wife and children, stealing livestock from nearby farms. When discovered, he reportedly threw his family into the sea before jumping himself. Another tale suggests the cave was a pirate hideout.
