The Church of Panagia (Church of the Virgin Mary) is the most iconic landmark of Folegandros, Greece, situated on a high rocky promontory overlooking Chora. It is a major religious site and the most photographed location on the island.

The church is a white-washed, multi-domed basilica featuring a distinct "zigzag" stone staircase that leads from the base of the hill to the sanctuary. The architecture is a blend of traditional Cycladic and ecclesiastical styles, with multiple belfries and a large courtyard paved in local stone. The interior contains a silver-plated icon of the Virgin Mary and marble architectural elements recycled from ancient ruins.

Location & Access Logistics

The site is located on the northern cliffs above Chora. Access is strictly on foot via the paved stone path that starts at the edge of the town. The ascent takes approximately 15–20 minutes. There is no vehicular access to the church itself. The nearest parking is at the municipal lots of Chora, and the local bus station is approximately 500 meters from the start of the trail.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Built on the foundations of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis or Apollo, the current structure dates primarily to the 19th-century restoration (1816–1821), though religious use of the site is centuries older. It is positioned on a rugged limestone ridge that provides a natural defensive vantage point over the Aegean Sea.

The church typically opens to the public during the late afternoon (18:00–21:00). Sunset is the peak visiting time due to the illumination of the white walls against the darkening sea. Morning visits are quieter and offer cooler temperatures for the uphill climb.

Facts & Legends

According to local tradition, the icon of the Virgin Mary was thrown into the sea to save it from pirates but returned miraculously to the shore of Folegandros. During Easter, the icon is carried in a procession through all the houses of the island, starting from this church.
