Dibba Rock, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, Asia
Dibba Rock is a prominent geological formation located off the coast of Dibba Al-Fujairah, within the Emirate of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.
This large, dark grey igneous rock juts out of the sea, characterized by its rough, weathered surface and the presence of seabirds nesting on its ledges.
Visual Characteristics
Dibba Rock is an approximately 30-meter high, solitary rock outcrop. Its surface is composed of dark, volcanic rock, exhibiting a rugged texture due to erosion. The base of the rock is often submerged during high tide, with visible barnacles and marine growth. The surrounding water is typically clear, allowing visibility of the seabed in shallower areas.
Location & Access Logistics
Dibba Rock is situated approximately 1 kilometer offshore from the Dibba Al-Fujairah coastline. Access is exclusively by boat. Local boat operators can be hired from Dibba Al-Fujairah port, which is located about 40 kilometers north of Fujairah city center via Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) and then Route 7. Parking is available at the Dibba Al-Fujairah port facilities. There are no public transport routes directly to the rock; boat hire is the sole method of access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Dibba Rock is a remnant of ancient volcanic activity in the region, formed from solidified lava flows. It is classified as a marine geological feature. Ecologically, it serves as a vital resting and nesting site for various seabird species and provides a substrate for marine life, contributing to the local reef ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling and diving are the primary activities at Dibba Rock. The waters surrounding the rock support a diverse array of marine life, including fish and coral formations. Boat tours often include stops for swimming and observing the rock from the water. Birdwatching is also possible from the boat.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities or infrastructure directly on Dibba Rock. Amenities such as restrooms, food vendors, and shade are available at the Dibba Al-Fujairah port. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable from the shore and can be intermittent when out at sea near the rock.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for visibility for snorkeling and diving is during the morning hours, from approximately 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, when the sun angle provides optimal light penetration. The months of October through April offer the most pleasant weather conditions, with lower humidity and cooler temperatures. High tide is generally preferred for boat access and to observe more of the rock's base.
Facts & Legends
Local fishermen sometimes refer to Dibba Rock as "The Sentinel" due to its solitary appearance guarding the coastline. It is a known aggregation point for various fish species, making it a productive spot for marine observation.
