Domplatz Square, St Polten, Austria, Europe
Domplatz (Cathedral Square) is the largest and most historically significant square in the center of St. Pölten. It serves as a primary site for ecclesiastical, archaeological, and civic activities.
Visual Characteristics
The square is a vast, open paved area dominated on its eastern side by the Baroque St. Pölten Cathedral and the adjacent Bishop’s Palace (Bischofshof). The perimeter is lined with historical townhouses. Following a major redesign completed in 2023, the square features a minimalist, modern surface that highlights its massive scale while preserving its function as a central urban gathering space.

Historical & Archaeological Origin
Domplatz sits atop the site of the Roman administrative center Aelium Cetium. Between 2010 and 2019, one of the largest archaeological excavations in Europe took place here, uncovering over 20,000 skeletons from a medieval cemetery and significant Roman ruins. Historically, it was the site of a Benedictine and later an Augustinian monastery, forming the core around which the city developed.
Key Highlights & Activities
Wochenmarkt (Weekly Market): Every Thursday and Saturday morning (07:00–12:30), the square hosts a large traditional market selling regional produce, meats, and crafts.
St. Pölten Cathedral: The focal point of the square, featuring a lavish Baroque interior.
Events: A major venue for open-air concerts, city festivals, and the annual Advent market.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The square is fully barrier-free. Public seating is available, and the space is surrounded by cafes and shops in the adjacent streets. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. Public restrooms are located nearby in the Town Hall (Rathaus).
Best Time to Visit

Facts & Legends
A technical highlight of the recent renovation is the specialized paving designed to handle heavy loads for event infrastructure while maintaining a uniform appearance. During the excavations, researchers found evidence of a massive Roman forum, confirming that the square has remained the city's administrative heart for nearly 2,000 years.
