FushiFaru Maldives, Thaa Atoll, Maldives, Asia
FushiFaru is a coral island located in the Thaa Atoll of the Maldives. It is a small, uninhabited island known for its marine life.
Visual Characteristics
FushiFaru is a low-lying coral island with a sandy beach perimeter. The interior consists of dense tropical vegetation, primarily palm trees. The surrounding lagoon water exhibits a gradient from pale turquoise near the shore to deep blue further out. The seabed is composed of coral fragments and sand.
Location & Access Logistics
FushiFaru is situated approximately 180 kilometers south of Malé International Airport. Access is primarily via speedboat transfer from the nearest inhabited island, Thimarafushi, which is a 30-minute journey. There are no direct public transport routes to FushiFaru itself. Private boat charters are also available from resorts in the Thaa Atoll. There is no dedicated parking on the island.
Historical & Ecological Origin
FushiFaru is a natural coral formation, characteristic of the Maldivian archipelago. It developed over millennia from the accumulation of coral polyps and their skeletal remains. The island's current form is a result of natural geological processes and sea level fluctuations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Snorkeling around the house reef is a primary activity, with opportunities to observe reef fish and coral formations. Diving excursions can be arranged to explore deeper channels and potential manta ray aggregation points. Beachcombing along the shoreline is also possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
FushiFaru has no permanent infrastructure or amenities. There are no restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors. Cell phone signal is generally weak to non-existent on the island.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for clear water visibility for snorkeling and diving is during the dry season, from December to April. The period between May and November is the wet season, which can bring increased rainfall and reduced visibility. High tide is generally preferred for accessing the house reef.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that FushiFaru was once a resting place for ancient mariners. While unverified, the island's remote location and natural harbor-like lagoon could have supported such use. A specific tip for visitors is to bring all necessary supplies, including water and sun protection, as nothing is available on the island.
