The temple was established in the late 19th century, with its foundation laid in 1885 by the Venerable Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thera. It was later expanded and developed under the guidance of the Venerable Madihe Pannaseeha Maha Nayaka Thera and currently under the stewardship of the Venerable Galaboda Gnanissara Thera. Its purpose was to serve as a place of religious observance, education, and preservation of Buddhist heritage.
