Gwangju Park is located 4.5 kilometers west of Gwangju City Hall. Access is via Gwangju Metropolitan Subway Line 1 to Nokdong Station, followed by a 10-minute walk east. Alternatively, city bus routes 100, 110, and 518 stop directly in front of the park's main entrance on Gwangju-daero street. Limited street parking is available on adjacent side streets; the nearest paid parking lot is 500 meters south at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium.

Gwangju Park was established in 1965 as part of a city beautification initiative. The land was formerly agricultural fields. The pond is man-made, created by damming a small seasonal stream. The surrounding vegetation consists of native Korean species.

A local anecdote suggests that on clear nights, the reflection of the moon in the central pond is particularly vivid, leading some older residents to believe it holds a connection to celestial events. The park's original design included a small aviary, which was removed in the late 1980s.
