Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, Lewiston, USA Idaho, North America

Hells Canyon National Recreation Area is a protected area in the United States, located primarily in Oregon and Idaho. It encompasses the deepest river gorge in North America.

Visual Characteristics

The canyon walls rise between 5,000 and 8,000 feet above the Snake River. Rock formations consist of basalt flows, granite, and metamorphic rock, displaying colors ranging from dark grey to reddish-brown. Vegetation varies from arid desert scrub at lower elevations to coniferous forests at higher elevations. The Snake River is a turbid, greenish-brown color, with sections of whitewater rapids.

Location & Access Logistics

The primary access point for visitors arriving from Lewiston, Idaho, is via State Highway 128 (also known as the Lower Granite Dam Road) which follows the Snake River for approximately 30 miles to the Hells Gate State Park. From Hells Gate State Park, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway (Forest Road 49) continues south for about 60 miles, providing access to various viewpoints and trailheads. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and developed recreation sites. Public transportation is not available within the recreation area.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Hells Canyon was carved by the Snake River over millions of years through a process of erosion. The geological history involves multiple volcanic eruptions and tectonic activity. The area is ecologically diverse, supporting a range of habitats from riparian zones along the river to alpine meadows. Native American tribes have inhabited the region for thousands of years. The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area was established by Congress in 1975.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include jet boat tours on the Snake River, which offer access to the canyon floor and its remote sections. Hiking is possible on numerous trails, such as the Hells Canyon Creek Trail and the Buck Creek Trail. Angling for sturgeon and salmon is permitted. Wildlife viewing opportunities include bighorn sheep, mountain goats, and various bird species. Photography is a common activity, particularly at sunrise and sunset.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at developed campgrounds and visitor centers. Shade is limited in many areas, especially along the river. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally unavailable in the canyon depths. Food vendors are not present within the recreation area; visitors should bring their own supplies. Developed campgrounds offer basic facilities, and some backcountry camping is permitted with a permit.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for visiting are typically May through October, avoiding the winter snow and ice. For photography, early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting conditions for the canyon walls. Jet boat tours operate primarily from late spring through early fall. River levels can influence boat tour accessibility and whitewater conditions.

Facts & Legends

The deepest point of Hells Canyon is approximately 7,993 feet (2,436 meters) deep. A specific tip for visitors is to be aware of rattlesnakes, which are common in the drier, lower elevations of the canyon during warmer months.
