Historical & Ecological Origin
Peanut Island was created in 1918 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of a dredging project to improve navigation in the Lake Worth Inlet. The concrete bunker was constructed in the 1960s as a fallout shelter for President John F. Kennedy and his family during the Cold War.

The JFK Bunker on Peanut Island was never used by President Kennedy. It was completed after his assassination. A unique tip for visitors is to explore the shallow waters on the western side of the island at low tide, where small marine life is often visible.
