It serves as an entry point to the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park.

Visual Characteristics

The center is a single-story structure constructed primarily from dark-stained wood with a corrugated metal roof. It features large, open-air covered areas and a central enclosed building. The exterior is unpainted wood, blending with the surrounding tropical vegetation.

The Kipahulu Heritage Center is situated approximately 10 miles east of Hana town along the Hana Highway (State Route 31). From the Hana Highway, turn onto the unpaved Kipahulu Road, which leads directly to the park entrance and parking area. Parking is available in a designated lot adjacent to the center. There are no public transport services directly to the center; access is via private vehicle.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Kipahulu District was incorporated into Haleakala National Park in 1969. The heritage center itself was constructed to provide visitor services and educational information about the natural and cultural resources of the area. The land is part of the traditional ahupua'a of Kipahulu, an ancient Hawaiian land division system.

Key Highlights & Activities

Information on hiking trails within the Kipahulu District, including the Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls and the Kuloa Point Trail to the Seven Sacred Pools (Ohe'o Gulch). Ranger-led programs are sometimes offered. Visitors can obtain maps and safety information.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the center. Limited shade is provided by the covered structures. Cell phone signal is generally unreliable within the immediate vicinity of the center and park trails. No food vendors are located at the center; visitors should bring their own provisions.

Best Time to Visit

The center is typically open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For photography of the Seven Sacred Pools, early morning or late afternoon offers softer light. The Pipiwai Trail can be muddy after rainfall, making dry conditions preferable. High tide is not a factor for access to the trails or pools.

Facts & Legends

The Seven Sacred Pools are a series of natural freshwater pools and waterfalls. Local tradition holds that the pools were once used by Hawaiian royalty for bathing. The area is also significant for its native plant species, including the ʻōhiʻa lehua tree.
