The park was established in 1869 on the former grounds of the Malmöhus Castle fortifications. It was designed by Danish landscape architect O.J. Smith. Its original purpose was to serve as a public recreational park for the citizens of Malmö, initially named Kung Oscar II:s park. The site's history as a defensive moat and rampart system influenced its current topography and water features.
