Lake Khanbulan, Lankaran, Azerbaijan, Asia

Lake Khanbulan is a reservoir located in the Lankaran district of Azerbaijan. It serves as a primary source of drinking water for the city of Lankaran.

Visual Characteristics

The lake is characterized by its dark, often deep blue water, reflecting the surrounding vegetation and sky. The shoreline is irregular, with areas of dense reeds and marsh grasses transitioning to steeper, forested slopes on the higher ground. The water surface can appear calm or exhibit moderate chop depending on wind conditions.

Location & Access Logistics

Lake Khanbulan is situated approximately 15 kilometers northwest of the city center of Lankaran. Access is primarily via the R12 regional road, turning onto local unpaved tracks leading to the reservoir. Limited parking is available at designated points near the dam structure. Public transport does not directly service the lake; a private vehicle or taxi is required.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The reservoir was constructed in the mid-20th century to manage water resources for agricultural and domestic use in the Lankaran region. It is an artificial lake formed by damming the Khanbulan River, a tributary of the Aras River basin. The surrounding area is part of the Lankaran Lowland, known for its subtropical climate and diverse flora.

Key Highlights & Activities

Fishing is permitted in designated areas of the lake, subject to local regulations. Observation of birdlife is a common activity due to the presence of various waterfowl and migratory species. Walking trails exist along sections of the dam and shoreline, offering views of the water and surrounding landscape.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic infrastructure is present at the dam site, including a control structure. Restrooms are not consistently available. Shade is provided by natural tree cover in surrounding areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally weak to non-existent at the lake itself, with intermittent service closer to the main road.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the water and landscape. The months of April through October offer the most favorable weather conditions, with less rainfall and moderate temperatures. No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lake's depth is such that it holds the tears of ancient spirits who once inhabited the surrounding forests. Scientifically, the lake's water quality is monitored due to its role as a municipal water supply.
