Georgetown Lake was formed by the construction of the Georgetown Dam, completed in 1910. The dam was built by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company to provide water for its mining operations and hydroelectric power generation. Ecologically, the area is part of the Northern Rocky Mountains, characterized by subalpine forests and montane meadows.
