Lake Wapello State Park, Ottumwa, USA Iowa, North America

Lake Wapello State Park is a public recreation area located in Davis County, Iowa, approximately 16 kilometers northwest of Ottumwa.

Visual Characteristics

The park centers around a 280-acre (110 ha) man-made lake. The lake's water color varies from greenish to brown depending on recent rainfall and algal blooms. The shoreline is predominantly composed of mowed grass transitioning to wooded areas. Tree species include oak, hickory, and maple. The terrain is gently rolling with some steeper slopes near the lake's edge. The park's developed areas feature picnic shelters constructed from concrete and wood, with gravel or paved pathways.

Location & Access Logistics

Access to Lake Wapello State Park is via County Road V46 (also known as Wapello Road). From Ottumwa, take US Highway 34 West for approximately 10 kilometers, then turn north onto County Road V46. The park entrance is located 6.4 kilometers north on V46. Ample parking is available at designated lots near the beach, boat ramp, and picnic areas. No public transportation services operate directly to the park.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Lake Wapello was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) between 1935 and 1937 as part of a New Deal initiative to create recreational opportunities and combat soil erosion. The lake was formed by damming a small tributary of the Des Moines River. The park's ecological classification is primarily deciduous forest and artificial lake habitat.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include swimming at the designated beach area, boating (electric motors only), fishing for bass, crappie, and bluegill, and hiking on the park's trail system. The main trail is approximately 3.2 kilometers long and encircles the lake. Camping is available in designated campgrounds. Picnicking is permitted at various shelters and tables throughout the park.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms with flush toilets are available at the beach and campground areas. Several picnic shelters are equipped with tables and grills. Shade is provided by mature trees in picnic areas and by the shelters. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the developed areas of the park, though it may be intermittent in more remote sections. No food vendors are located within the park; visitors should bring their own provisions or travel to Ottumwa.

Best Time to Visit

For swimming and boating, the months of June, July, and August offer the warmest water temperatures. For hiking and photography, early morning or late afternoon in spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) provide optimal lighting conditions and cooler temperatures. The lake is accessible year-round, but ice fishing is permitted only when ice conditions are deemed safe by park officials.

Facts & Legends

A local legend suggests that the lake is named after Chief Wapello of the Sac and Fox tribes, though historical records indicate the name was chosen by the CCC workers. A specific tip for anglers: the submerged timber structures on the lakebed, remnants of the original landscape before the dam was built, are productive spots for crappie fishing.
