L’Aventure du Sucre (Sugar Museum), Pamplemousses, Mauritius, Africa
L’Aventure du Sucre is a museum and former sugar factory located in the Beau Plan Sugar Estate in Pamplemousses, Mauritius. It serves as a dedicated site for the preservation of the industrial history of sugar production and its impact on the island’s socio-economic development.
Visual Characteristics
The site is housed in a repurposed industrial factory characterized by high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and rusted iron machinery. The exterior features large stone masonry typical of 18th and 19th-century colonial industrial architecture. Inside, the museum maintains its original industrial scale, with massive sugar boilers, vacuum pans, and a 15-meter tall chimney remaining as core structural features. The grounds include landscaped gardens with vintage locomotives once used to transport cane.
Location & Access Logistics
The museum is located at Beau Plan, B18, Pamplemousses, approximately 11 kilometers northeast of Port Louis. It is situated directly opposite the SSR Botanical Garden. Access is via the M2 motorway; travelers should take the Pamplemousses exit and follow signs for "L’Aventure du Sucre." Ample free parking for cars and tour buses is available on-site. The museum is accessible via public bus routes 22, 85, or 95 from Port Louis, stopping at the Pamplemousses station.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Beau Plan Sugar Factory was founded in 1797 and operated continuously until 1999. Following its closure, the facility was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 2002. The site preserves the 250-year history of sugar cultivation in Mauritius, which was the primary economic driver during both French and British colonial rule. The machinery preserved on-site represents various stages of 19th and 20th-century steam and vacuum-driven technology.
Key Highlights & Activities
The main activity is a self-guided or guided tour through the factory floor, utilizing interactive screens and historical displays. Visitors can view the original machinery used for crushing, boiling, and centrifuging sugar cane. At the end of the tour, a sugar tasting session at the "Boutik" allows visitors to sample 12 varieties of unrefined sugar. Rum tasting, specifically the New Grove brand produced on-site, is also included for adults.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site features the "Le Fangourin" restaurant, which serves local cuisine in an open-air veranda setting. Restrooms are located within the main factory building and at the entrance. The entire museum is wheelchair accessible via ramps. The facility is fully covered by 4G/5G cellular signal. A souvenir boutique and a dedicated children's educational trail with mascots are integrated into the layout.
Best Time to Visit
The museum is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The best time for a visit is in the morning to avoid large tour groups that typically arrive after 11:00. Because the museum is located inside a former factory, it can become humid; visiting during the winter months (June to August) provides a more comfortable internal temperature. Allocate at least 2.5 hours for a comprehensive tour.
Facts & Legends
The factory contains a massive chimney that remains a local navigational landmark. A specific historical oddity is the display of a life-sized replica of a ship's hold, illustrating the cramped conditions under which enslaved people and indentured laborers were transported to work on the plantations. The museum also holds the secret to producing "Muscovado" sugar, a specific dark, unrefined sugar that remains a primary export for the Mauritian economy.
