Lotrščak Tower, Zagreb, Croatia, Europe
Lotrščak Tower (Kula Lotrščak) is a 13th-century fortified tower located in Gradec, the historic Upper Town of Zagreb. It stands at the southern edge of the former city fortifications, overlooking the Ilica street and the Lower Town.
Visual Characteristics
The tower is a robust square masonry structure composed of thick stone and brick walls. It features a predominantly Romanesque base with subsequent modifications in later centuries. The exterior is topped by a wooden roof and a small turret. A white and green 19th-century facade characterizes the upper levels, which also house the Grič cannon.
Location & Access Logistics
The tower is situated at Strossmayerovo šetalište 9. It is positioned at the top station of the Zagreb Funicular (Uspinjača), which connects the Lower Town (Tomićeva Street) to the Upper Town. Pedestrian access is also available via the Zakmardi stairs from Ban Jelačić Square or the Radićeva street. Motor vehicle access is restricted in this pedestrian zone; the nearest public parking is the Tuškanac garage (0.5km West).
Historical & Ecological Origin
Constructed in the mid-13th century, the tower was built to guard the southern gate (Mala vrata) of the Gradec town wall. Its name is derived from the Latin campana latrunculorum, meaning "thieves' bell," referring to a bell installed in 1646 to signal the closing of the city gates. The building materials are locally sourced stone and clay bricks typical of medieval Silesian and Pannonian fortifications.
Key Highlights & Activities
The tower features an internal spiral staircase leading to a 360-degree observation deck. Every day at noon, the Grič cannon is fired from the top floor, a tradition maintained since January 1, 1877. Visitors can enter the tower to view a small exhibition on its history and witness the cannon firing from the interior (limited capacity) or the surrounding promenade.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no public restrooms directly inside the tower, but facilities are available at the adjacent funicular station. The tower is not wheelchair accessible due to the narrow, steep internal staircase. 5G and 4G cell signals are strong. Shade is provided by the dense tree canopy of the Strossmayer Promenade immediately adjacent to the building.
Best Time to Visit
The most significant time to visit is shortly before 12:00 PM to witness the daily cannon blast. For photography of the city panorama, late afternoon provides optimal lighting for the Lower Town and the Cathedral. The tower is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and weekends from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Facts & Legends
According to a local legend, the Grič cannon was first fired to repel Ottoman forces stationed across the Sava river. The shot purportedly hit a rooster being carried on a silver platter to a Turkish pasha, causing the army to retreat in fear. Historically, the cannon was introduced to provide a precise time signal for the city's bell-ringers.
