Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia, Greece, Europe

Myrtos Beach is a world-renowned coastal landmark located on the northwestern coast of Kefalonia. It is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Greece and the Mediterranean, defined by its dramatic vertical cliffs and electric-blue water.

Visual Characteristics

The beach is a semi-circular cove composed of smooth white pebbles and coarse sand. The most striking feature is the color of the water, which transitions from pale turquoise to a deep, luminescent cobalt due to the suspension of fine white marble sediment. The beach is flanked by two steep, arid limestone mountains, Agia Dynati and Kalos Oros, which rise abruptly from the shoreline.

Location & Access Logistics

Myrtos is located 30 kilometers north of Argostoli and 5 kilometers from the village of Divarata. Access is via a steep, winding 2-kilometer asphalt road with several hairpin turns. A large, unpaved parking area is situated directly behind the beach. During peak season, a local shuttle bus often connects Divarata to the shore. There are two primary viewpoints on the coastal road above the beach that are essential for panoramic photography.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The beach was formed by tectonic activity and coastal erosion of the limestone cliffs. Unlike many Aegean beaches, it faces the Ionian Sea to the west, making it susceptible to strong currents and large swells. Following the 1953 Ionian earthquake, the landscape of the surrounding cliffs was significantly altered, further defining the rugged aesthetic of the bay.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is the primary activity, though the water depth increases rapidly just a few meters from the shore. The beach is a premier location for watching the sunset, as it faces due west. Paragliding is a popular seasonal activity, with pilots launching from the cliffs above and landing on the white pebbles.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The beach is "semi-organized," meaning a portion of the shore features municipal sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, while the rest remains open. A small snack bar (canteen) typically operates during the summer months. Public restrooms and changing booths are available. 4G and 5G mobile signals are strong. There is no natural shade; visitors are advised to bring high-SPF protection.

Best Time to Visit

To secure parking and a spot near the water, arrival before 10:00 is necessary in July and August. The afternoon (after 15:00) is best for experiencing the most intense water colors as the sun moves west. Swimming is not advised during strong western winds, as the waves can become dangerous and the undertow is powerful.

Facts & Legends

Myrtos gained international fame as a filming location for the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin. A local safety tip: the white pebbles reflect intense heat and light; footwear is required to walk on the beach comfortably, and polarized sunglasses are recommended to mitigate the glare from the white stone and water.
