The capitol building is a 400-foot (122 m) tall skyscraper, designed in a distinctive Art Deco and Neoclassical style. Its exterior is primarily constructed from Indiana limestone and features a prominent central tower topped by a gilded dome. The building's base is a square structure, with four wings extending outwards. Interior spaces are adorned with marble, granite, and intricate mosaics depicting Nebraska's history and natural resources.

Construction of the current capitol building began in 1922 and concluded in 1932. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue was the principal architect.
