The Nieuwe Kerk is a prominent Protestant church and Dutch national monument located on the Markt square in the center of Delft. It functions as the official burial site for the Dutch Royal Family and is the second tallest church tower in the Netherlands.

The building is a Brick Gothic basilica constructed in a cruciform plan with a distinctive 108.75-meter-tall tower. The tower features a telescopic design that transitions from square brick foundations to octagonal sandstone upper tiers, culminating in a dark, pointed spire. The interior contains white plastered walls, high vaulted ceilings, and a massive marble and bronze funeral monument dedicated to William the Silent.

The church is situated at Markt 80, 2611 GX Delft. It is 0.8 kilometers from Delft Central Station, accessible via a 10-minute walk through the pedestrianized historic center. Bus lines 33, 37, and 60 serve the nearby "Markt" stop. No vehicle access is permitted on the square; the nearest commercial parking is the Marktgarage on Willem Naghelstraat.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction commenced in 1393 following a series of visions reported by local residents on the site of a former gallows field. The tower reached its current height in 1496, though the spire has been replaced twice due to fire and the 1654 "Delft Thunderclap" gunpowder explosion. It transitioned from a Catholic church dedicated to Mary and Saint Ursula to a Protestant house of worship during the Reformation in 1572.

Visitors can view the Royal Crypt entrance, marked by a large stone slab engraved with the coat of arms of the House of Orange-Nassau. Climbing the 376 steps of the tower is possible for panoramic views of the city. The interior houses a historic 1839 pipe organ built by Jonathan Bätz, which is used for regular recitals.

There is no elevator for the tower climb, which requires high physical exertion. Food and beverage vendors are located immediately outside the entrance along the perimeter of the Markt.

Best Time to Visit

The church is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM (5:00 PM in summer). Late afternoon provides the best exterior lighting for photography of the tower and the adjacent City Hall. Access is restricted on Sundays to accommodate active religious services.

Facts & Legends

The Royal Crypt beneath the floor contains the remains of 46 members of the Dutch royal family, including King Willem-Alexander's ancestors. A local historical oddity is that the spire's stone appears to change color from light grey to black during rainfall due to the absorption properties of the specific sandstone used in its 19th-century restoration.
