Notre Dame Auxiliatrice (Red Roof Church), Cap Malheureux, Mauritius, Africa
Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, commonly referred to as the Red Roof Church, is a Roman Catholic chapel located at the northernmost point of Mauritius in Cap Malheureux. It serves as a primary landmark for both the local community and the tourism sector.
Visual Characteristics
The chapel is defined by a vivid bright red gabled roof and white-painted stone walls. The architecture is a simplified colonial style, featuring a small independent bell tower and wooden shutters. The interior follows a maritime theme, with an altar carved from local basalt and a holy water stoup made from a giant clam shell (Tridacna gigas).
Location & Access Logistics
The site is situated on the B13 Coastal Road in Cap Malheureux.
Driving: Approximately 10 minutes (6km) north of Grand Baie. A paved public parking area is located adjacent to the beach.
Public Transport: Bus route 215 (Grand Baie to Cap Malheureux) stops directly in front of the church.
Access: The grounds are open daily. Interior access is permitted between 09:00 and 18:00, provided no religious services are in progress.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1938, the church is dedicated to Mary Help of Christians. Cap Malheureux (Cape of Misfortune) earned its name from the high frequency of shipwrecks on its reefs and its historical status as the 1810 landing site for British forces during the capture of the island from the French. The structure was built to serve the northern fishing community.
Key Highlights & Activities
The site is a major destination for photography due to the view of the church framed against the northern islets, specifically Coin de Mire (Gunner's Quoin).
Religious Services: Masses are held Saturday at 18:00 and Sunday at 09:00.
Waterfront: A stone jetty and small sandy beach behind the church offer views of local artisanal fishing boats.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The area includes a paved square and stone benches. Public restrooms are located in the adjacent park. Small shops (tabagies) and street food vendors are within 100 meters. 5G cellular coverage is stable. The main entrance has a small ramp, though the interior is compact.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon (16:00–18:00) provides the most favorable lighting on the red roof and the ocean. Arrival before 10:00 is recommended to avoid tour groups.
Facts & Legends
The interior woodwork of the ceiling is designed to resemble the inverted hull of a ship. While now maintained for its aesthetic value, the red roof historically functioned as a visual beacon for fishermen navigating the rocky northern coastline.
