Piața Libertății (Old Town Square) is the historical, social, and architectural nucleus of Baia Mare.

The square is a large, rectangular pedestrian plaza surrounded by 14th–18th century buildings. It features a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque facades. The central area is paved with natural stone and granite, accented by manicured green spaces and outdoor cafe terraces. The skyline is dominated by the adjacent Stephen’s Tower.

Historical & Ecological Origin
Dating back to the 1347 royal charter, the square served as the city's main marketplace and site of public assembly. It was historically the center of the "Free Royal City" of Baia Mare. During the 2003–2004 archaeological rehabilitation, medieval foundations and old drainage systems were unearthed and preserved beneath the modern paving.
