Construction of Our Lady of the Rockies began in 1985 and was completed in 1987. The project was initiated by local businessman and philanthropist, George L. Grant, as a tribute to his late mother and all mothers. The site is geologically part of the Rocky Mountains, specifically the Butte Pluton, a large igneous intrusion.
