Parque del Turia, Valencia, Spain, Europe
The Turia Garden (Jardín del Turia) is Spain's largest urban park, stretching 9 kilometers through Valencia. It occupies the former riverbed of the Turia River, creating a continuous green belt that connects the western Bioparc to the eastern City of Arts and Sciences.
Visual Characteristics
The park functions as a "green lung" winding beneath 18 bridges that range from 16th-century stone structures to modern Calatrava designs. The landscape is diverse, featuring Mediterranean pine groves, rose gardens, palm-lined avenues, and expansive grass lawns. It is characterized by its sunken elevation relative to the street level, providing a natural buffer from urban noise.
Location & Access Logistics
Accessibility: Open 24/7 with no admission fee. Entry points via ramps and stairs are located at every bridge along the city center.
Transit: Directly served by Metro stations Alameda, Turia, and Colón.
Navigation: A dedicated cycle path and a separate running track (Circuit 5K) run the entire length of the park.
Historical Origin
Following the catastrophic flood of 1957, the Spanish government diverted the Turia River to the south of the city. While initial plans intended to convert the dry riverbed into a massive highway, a 1970s citizens' movement successfully campaigned for it to become a public park. The garden was inaugurated in 1986.
