Poole River Waterfall, Rio Claro, Trinidad and Tobago, North America

Poole River Waterfall is a natural cascade located within the Caroni Swamp National Park, near Rio Claro, Trinidad and Tobago.

This site features a single-drop waterfall with a height of approximately 15 meters, flowing over a limestone rock face. The surrounding vegetation is dense tropical rainforest, characterized by broadleaf trees and ferns. The water pool at the base is approximately 5 meters in diameter.

Location & Access Logistics

The waterfall is situated 12 kilometers south of Rio Claro. Access requires traveling south on the Naparima Mayaro Road (Siparia Road) for 10 kilometers, then turning east onto a gravel track marked by a small sign for Poole River. This track is approximately 2 kilometers long and is best navigated by 4x4 vehicles due to its uneven surface. No public transport services reach the waterfall directly. Parking is available on the side of the gravel track, with space for approximately 5 vehicles.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The waterfall is a result of natural erosion of the limestone bedrock over millennia. It is part of the Caroni Swamp National Park, an area recognized for its biodiversity and mangrove ecosystems, though the waterfall itself is situated in a terrestrial forest zone.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in the pool at the base of the waterfall. Hiking along the river upstream is permitted. Observation of local bird species is a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

No formal infrastructure is present at the waterfall site. There are no restrooms, designated picnic areas, or food vendors. Cell phone signal is intermittent and unreliable. Natural shade is provided by the surrounding tree canopy.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when sunlight penetrates the canopy. The dry season, from January to May, offers the most stable access conditions. During the wet season (June to December), the gravel track can become impassable.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the water from the waterfall possesses healing properties, though this is not scientifically verified. The area is known for its population of guacharos (oilbirds).
