Historical & Ecological Origin

The garden was established in 1970 by the Bahamas National Trust on land formerly owned by Wallace Groves, a lumber magnate. The site was developed to conserve a significant collection of palm species acquired by Groves. Ecologically, it represents a managed tropical dry forest ecosystem.

Visitors can walk the garden's paved and unpaved trails. Specific palm species are identified with signage. The central pond area offers opportunities for observing local birdlife. Photography is permitted throughout the grounds.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available near the main entrance. Shaded areas are provided by the dense tree canopy. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No on-site food vendors are present, but facilities are located in nearby commercial areas along Eastern Road.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for photography is in the morning between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM for diffused light. The months of November through April offer the most pleasant weather, with lower humidity and average temperatures between 21°C and 27°C (70°F and 80°F). No specific tide requirements apply.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature is the collection of over 100 species of palms, making it one of the most diverse palm collections in the Caribbean. The garden also houses the administrative offices of the Bahamas National Trust.
