Franconia Notch State Park is a 6,640-acre protected area located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a glacial notch carved by the Franconia Glacier, with steep granite cliffs and forested slopes. The Pemigewasset River flows through the notch. Notable rock formations include the Flume Gorge, a narrow chasm with granite walls, and the Basin, a large pothole carved by glacial meltwater. Vegetation consists primarily of mixed hardwood and coniferous forests.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is situated along Interstate 93 (I-93) in central New Hampshire. The main entrance is accessible via Exit 34A (southbound) and Exit 34B (northbound) off I-93. The park is approximately 20 miles north of Plymouth, NH, and 40 miles north of Concord, NH. Ample parking is available at designated lots for trailheads, visitor centers, and attractions such as the Flume Gorge and Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway. Public transport options are limited; the closest Amtrak station is in White River Junction, Vermont, approximately 50 miles west.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Franconia Notch is a geologically significant area shaped by glacial activity during the last ice age. The notch itself was formed by the erosive power of glaciers. The Flume Gorge was discovered in 1808 by two local women. The park was established to preserve its natural beauty and geological features.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include hiking on trails such as the Franconia Ridge Loop (challenging), the Flume Gorge trail (paved, accessible), and the Artist's Bluff trail (moderate). The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway provides access to the summit for panoramic views. The Basin offers a short, accessible walk to view the pothole. Swimming is permitted in designated areas of Echo Lake. Skiing is available at Cannon Mountain Ski Area during winter months.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Flume Gorge Visitor Center, Cannon Mountain base lodge, and picnic areas. Shade is provided by the forest canopy along trails and at picnic sites. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent within the notch and along I-93. Food vendors and a cafeteria are located at the Cannon Mountain base lodge and the Flume Gorge Visitor Center.
Best Time to Visit
For hiking and general sightseeing, the best months are from late May to mid-October, avoiding peak foliage season for fewer crowds. The best time of day for photography is generally early morning or late afternoon for softer light. The Flume Gorge is typically open from mid-May to mid-October. High tide is not a relevant factor for this inland park.
Facts & Legends
The park was once home to the "Old Man of the Mountain," a natural rock profile that was a state symbol until its collapse in 2003. Local folklore speaks of the spirits of the mountains watching over the notch.
