Rijeka Tunnel, Rijeka, Croatia, Europe

The Rijeka Tunnel is a 350-meter-long subterranean pedestrian passage located beneath the historic center of Rijeka, Croatia. Originally constructed as a military air-raid shelter, it connects the area near St. Vitus Cathedral to the courtyard of the Dolac Primary School.

Visual Characteristics

The tunnel is carved directly into the bedrock at an average depth of 10 meters. It maintains a width of approximately 4 meters and an average height of 2.5 meters. The interior features vaulted concrete ceilings and rough-hewn stone walls, with a constant internal temperature of roughly 15°C. Original wartime signage, including the Italian phrase "Riservato all U.N.P.A." (Reserved for the Anti-aircraft Corps), remains visible in several sections.

Location & Access Logistics

The main southern entrance is situated at Grivica Street, immediately adjacent to the Cathedral of St. Vitus. The northern exit emerges at the Dolac Primary School courtyard on the street of the same name. The site is a 5-minute walk from the Korzo promenade and 0.6km from the main Rijeka Bus Station (Žabica). Access is pedestrian-only, and a small entry fee is charged at the gate (approximately 2.00 EUR for adults).

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Royal Italian Army commissioned the construction between 1939 and 1942 to protect the civilian population from Allied aerial bombardments during World War II. The tunnel was part of a broader defensive network known as the Alpine Wall (Vallo Alpino). After being closed for 75 years, it was renovated and reopened to the public as a tourist attraction in 2017.

Key Highlights & Activities

Walking the full 350-meter length of the passage is the primary activity, providing a direct link between the Old Town and the Dolac district. The tunnel occasionally hosts art exhibitions, photo installations, and musical events. Visitors can examine original electrical installations and reinforced steel doors from the mid-20th century.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The tunnel is equipped with modern electric lighting and a paved, level walking surface. There are no restrooms or food vendors inside the passage; however, numerous facilities are available immediately outside both entrances in the city center. 4G/5G cell signal is generally weak or unavailable due to the depth and rock density.

Best Time to Visit

The tunnel is an effective retreat during the summer months (July–August) due to its naturally cool environment. It is open daily, typically from 09:00 to 17:00, though hours may extend during the summer season. Morning visits are recommended to avoid large school or tour groups.

Facts & Legends

While originally a WWII structure, the tunnel was reactivated as a functional bomb shelter during the Croatian War of Independence in the 1990s. A local legend suggests the tunnel network is far more extensive than the 350 meters currently open, allegedly connecting to secret bunkers and coastal fortifications used by the Italian and later German military.
