Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS), Roatan, Honduras, North America
The Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) is an educational and research facility situated on the island of Roatán, Honduras.
It is located on the northeast coast of Roatán, within the West Bay region.
Visual Characteristics
The RIMS facility comprises several low-rise structures constructed primarily from concrete and wood. The main building features a light-colored exterior with a corrugated metal roof. Adjacent to the main building are several open-air pavilions and docks constructed from weathered wood. The surrounding area is characterized by dense tropical vegetation, including palm trees and various flowering plants. The water directly in front of the facility is clear and exhibits a turquoise hue.
Location & Access Logistics
RIMS is located approximately 15 kilometers west of Coxen Hole, the main town on Roatán. Access is via the main island road, which is paved for most of the route. Turn north onto the unpaved access road marked for RIMS and Infinity Bay Resort. Parking is available on-site in a designated gravel lot. Public transportation options are limited; shared taxis (vans) operate along the main road and can drop visitors near the access turn-off, requiring a short walk. The closest major airport is Roatán International Airport (RTB).
Historical & Ecological Origin
RIMS was established in 1994 with the objective of promoting marine conservation and education in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. The facility is situated on a section of the reef that is ecologically significant, supporting a diverse array of marine life. The land itself is a coastal strip with mangrove fringes and adjacent coral reef formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can participate in guided snorkeling tours of the adjacent coral reef. Educational presentations on marine biology and conservation are offered daily. The facility also provides opportunities for scuba diving excursions. Observation of marine research activities is possible from designated areas.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available within the main building. Limited shaded areas are provided by the open-air pavilions. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. There are no on-site food vendors, but nearby resorts offer dining options.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for clear water visibility for snorkeling and diving is during the dry season, from December to May. Mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) offers good lighting conditions for underwater photography. High tide is generally preferred for reef access.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of RIMS is its involvement in the rescue and rehabilitation of sea turtles. Local folklore speaks of ancient mariners navigating by the specific patterns of the reef's coral formations.
