Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of the Oratory began in 1904 under the direction of Brother André, a lay brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross. The original purpose was to serve as a small chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph. The basilica's current structure, including the large dome, was completed in stages, with the main basilica consecrated in 1967. The site is part of the Mount Royal park system, a geological formation of volcanic origin.
