Maggie Daley Park is a 28-acre public park located in Chicago, Illinois, adjacent to Grant Park.

Visual Characteristics

The park features a large, multi-level playground constructed with wood and metal elements, incorporating climbing structures, slides, and swings. A ribbon-like skating ribbon encircles a central lawn area. The park's landscaping includes diverse plantings, with mature trees providing shade in designated areas. Paved pathways connect different zones.

Location & Access Logistics

Maggie Daley Park is situated at 337 E. Randolph Street, Chicago, IL 60601. It is approximately 0.5km East of the Chicago Loop. Access is available from Columbus Drive and Lake Shore Drive. Paid parking is available in the adjacent Grant Park South Garage (entrance on Michigan Avenue) and Millennium Park Garage (entrance on Columbus Drive). Public transportation options include the CTA 'L' trains (closest stations: Washington/Wabash, Monroe/Red Line) and numerous bus lines that stop along Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The park was constructed on the site of the former Eastlake Development and opened in 2014. It was designed by landscape architecture firm SWA Group and built by the Chicago Park District. The park's creation was part of a larger initiative to enhance Chicago's lakefront and public spaces.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include ice skating on the Skating Ribbon during winter months, and rollerblading or scootering during warmer seasons. The park offers extensive play areas for children, including a climbing wall and a water park. Picnic areas are available. Walking and jogging paths are integrated throughout the park.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are located within the park. Shaded areas are provided by mature trees and some covered structures. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the park. Food vendors are not permanently stationed within the park, but concessions are available at nearby cultural institutions and restaurants.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon light offers optimal conditions. The Skating Ribbon is operational from mid-November to mid-March, weather permitting. The park is accessible year-round, with spring and fall offering moderate temperatures for outdoor activities.

Facts & Legends

The park's design concept was inspired by the natural landscape of the region, with the Skating Ribbon intended to mimic a frozen river. A unique feature is the "Sea of Tranquility," a large, undulating lawn area designed for relaxation and informal gatherings.
