Parking is available along the main road adjacent to the beach, with capacity for approximately 30 vehicles. Public transport on Maafushi consists of local buses and taxis; the beach is a 5-minute taxi ride or a 20-minute walk from the ferry terminal.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Maafushi Island is a coral island formed by the accumulation of coral debris and sand over millennia. Sunset Beach is a natural formation, part of the larger reef system characteristic of the Maldives archipelago. Its current state is maintained by natural erosion and deposition processes.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is permitted. Snorkeling is possible directly from the shore, particularly around the reef edge. Sunbathing is a primary activity. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available from vendors located at the beach entrance.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the western end of the beach. Several shaded seating areas are provided by local vendors. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally strong. Food and beverage vendors operate along the main road bordering the beach, offering local snacks and drinks.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the period between 4:30 PM and 6:00 PM offers direct sunlight on the water. The dry season, from December to April, provides the most consistent clear weather. High tide is generally preferred for swimming and water activities due to deeper water access.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that the sand at Sunset Beach retains warmth longer than other beaches on the island, making it comfortable for evening strolls even after sunset. This is attributed to the high concentration of fine coral particles.
