The Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum Zürich) is Switzerland's most visited museum of cultural history. It is located in the heart of Zurich, adjacent to the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof).

The museum occupies two distinct architectural structures. The original 1898 building, designed by Gustav Gull, is a fairytale-like Neo-Gothic chateau featuring numerous towers, courts, and a park. In 2016, a modern extension designed by Christ & Gantenbein was added, characterized by raw, angular concrete forms that contrast with the historic stonework. The interior spans over 6,000 square meters of exhibition space.

Facts & Legends

The building's architect, Gustav Gull, incorporated original architectural elements from various historic Swiss buildings into the museum's design to create a "National Monument." One of its most famous rooms is the Hall of Arms, which contains the monumental mural "The Retreat from Marignano" by Ferdinand Hodler, which caused a national scandal upon its unveiling due to its stark, non-idealized depiction of war.
