Temple of Augustus, Pula, Croatia, Europe
The Temple of Augustus is a well-preserved Roman prostyle tetrastyle temple situated in the main municipal square, the Forum, in Pula, Croatia. Dedicated to the first Roman emperor, Augustus, it remains a primary example of classical Roman architecture in the Adriatic.
Visual Characteristics
The structure features a deep porch (pronaos) supported by six Corinthian columns-four across the front and one on each side. The columns are made of smooth marble with ornate acanthus-leaf capitals supporting a classic entablature and pediment. The cella (inner chamber) is constructed from large stone blocks. The temple stands on a raised podium and is noted for its elegant, slender proportions compared to more massive Roman structures.
Location & Access Logistics
Located at Forum b.b., the temple is in the southwestern part of Pula’s pedestrian center. It is a 10-minute walk (0.8km) southwest from the Pula Arena. Public transit users can take local buses to the "Giardini" station (0.4km away). The nearest vehicle access and paid parking are at the "Karolina" lot or along the Riva waterfront (0.2km).
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction took place between 2 BC and 14 AD, during the emperor's lifetime. It was originally part of a triad of temples; its twin, the Temple of Diana, is partially integrated into the rear of the adjacent Communal Palace. Over centuries, the building served as a church, a granary, and a museum. It was nearly destroyed by an aerial bomb in 1944 and meticulously reconstructed between 1945 and 1947.
Key Highlights & Activities
The interior functions as a lapidarium, housing a collection of Roman stone and bronze sculptures, including portrait busts of Roman emperors and citizens found during regional excavations. Visitors can examine the fine stone carvings on the frieze, which depict acanthus scrolls and birds. The surrounding Forum Square is a major public space used for civic gatherings and events.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site includes a small ticket desk inside the temple. Public restrooms are available in nearby municipal buildings or commercial cafes surrounding the Forum. 5G cell signal is strong. The square is level and paved, providing easy wheelchair access to the exterior, though the interior involves a few steps up to the podium.
Best Time to Visit
Operating hours are typically daily from 08:00 to 21:30 during the summer. Morning hours (08:30–10:00) offer lower crowd density. For photography, the western facade is best illuminated in the late afternoon when the sun highlights the details of the Corinthian capitals and the inscriptions.
Facts & Legends
The temple is considered one of the best examples of early imperial Roman architecture outside of Italy. A verified historical oddity is the dedication inscription on the architrave, which originally featured bronze letters that were removed in late antiquity, leaving only the indentations in the stone which were later used to reconstruct the text.
