Treasure Island, Ada Foah, Ghana, Africa

Treasure Island is a man-made recreational resort and destination located on an island within the Volta River in Ada Foah, Ghana. It serves as a commercial leisure complex situated approximately 2km upstream from the Atlantic Ocean estuary.

Visual Characteristics

The site features a mixture of contemporary concrete architecture, wooden boardwalks, and landscaped tropical greenery. It includes multiple swimming pools, including a distinct guitar-shaped pool, and white-painted multi-story hotel blocks. The surrounding river water is typically dark green or blue-grey, with the island's perimeter reinforced by stone gabions and sand embankments to prevent erosion.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is primarily via boat transfer from the Ada Foah riverfront, specifically from the Treasure Island Boat Terminal near the Ada Foah Clinic. The town of Ada Foah is reached via the N1 highway from Accra, turning south at Kasseh. Secure parking for vehicles is provided at the mainland ferry terminal, and the boat crossing takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes depending on river currents.

Historical & Ecological Origin

This is a modern commercial development commissioned by private developers and completed in the early 2020s. The site was transformed from a natural river island into an artificial resort complex designed for domestic and international tourism, specifically to leverage the calm waters of the Volta River.

Key Highlights & Activities

Water-based activities include jet-skiing, kayaking, and pontoon boat cruises along the Volta River. On-site facilities allow for horseback riding along the sand paths and swimming in the themed pool areas. The resort also operates a small avian sanctuary and a cinema for resident guests.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The island is fully developed with consistent electricity via generators and 4G/5G cell phone coverage. Amenities include multiple restaurants, bars, public restrooms, and shaded cabanas. Unlike the surrounding undeveloped ruins or lagoons, this site features a dedicated visitor reception and 24-hour security.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March provides the most stable weather for outdoor water sports and boat transfers. For photography, late afternoon (16:00–18:00) offers optimal lighting over the river. Weekdays are recommended for lower visitor density compared to the high-volume traffic experienced during public holidays and weekends.

Facts & Legends

The resort is known for housing one of the largest guitar-shaped swimming pools in West Africa, a design choice intended to be visible from aerial perspectives. A logistical "secret" for visitors is that the river water remains relatively calm even when the nearby Atlantic Ocean is turbulent, making it a safer alternative for amateur jet-skiers.
