Unawatuna Beach is a crescent-shaped coastal area situated 5 kilometers southeast of Galle-fort_galle" class="underline">Galle Fort in Sri Lanka.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features golden-yellow sand. The water is typically clear and turquoise, with a moderate wave action. Coconut palm trees line the back of the beach, providing natural shade.

Location & Access Logistics

Access is via the A2 coastal road. From Galle Fort, take the A2 east for approximately 5 kilometers. Turn south onto Unawatuna Mawatha. Parking is available along the main road and in designated lots, though it can be limited during peak season. Several local bus routes, including the 300 series, service the Galle-Galle Road and stop near Unawatuna. Tuk-tuks are readily available from Galle.

Unawatuna is a natural beach formation, shaped by coastal currents and sediment deposition over millennia. It is part of the southwestern coastal belt of Sri Lanka, known for its coral reefs and marine biodiversity.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is a primary activity. Snorkeling is possible, particularly around the coral reefs located offshore. Boat trips for whale and dolphin watching depart from nearby ports. Beachfront restaurants offer dining options.

Restrooms are available at various establishments along the beach. Shade is provided by palm trees and temporary structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally strong. Numerous food vendors and restaurants are present directly on the beach and along the adjacent road.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for dry weather are from December to April. Mid-morning offers good lighting for photography before the sun reaches its zenith. High tide can reduce the visible beach area.

Facts & Legends

A significant portion of the beach was submerged following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. A Japanese Peace Pagoda, built in 1960, is located on a hill overlooking the bay, offering panoramic views.
