Founded in 1859, it stands as one of York’s longstanding faith communities and was the city’s fourth Lutheran church and the first established west of the Codorus Creek. Its founding purpose was to create a new neighborhood church that united members from several existing Lutheran congregations, serving the growing population in that part of the city.

Architecture and Sanctuary

The current church building, dedicated on September 15, 1929, was designed by notable architect J.A. Dempwolf, a prominent figure in York’s architectural history. The sanctuary showcases beautiful stained-glass windows installed between 1928 and 1929, which remain one of the church’s most striking artistic features. These windows, crafted with great detail and at a considerable cost for the time, illuminate the interior with vibrant color and spiritual symbolism. The altar is marked by a silver hanging cross, made by Gorham & Company of New York, symbolizing the Christian faith and serving as a focal point during worship.
