The overall layout follows the natural contours of the cliff face.

Public transport options include local marshrutka (minibus) services from Gori's central bus station heading towards Kareli, which stop near the Uplistsikhe entrance. The walk from the bus stop to the site entrance is approximately 500 meters.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Uplistsikhe originated as a pagan religious center, with its earliest structures dating back to the Early Iron Age (around 1000 BCE). It was later expanded and utilized by various cultures, including Hellenistic, Roman, and medieval Georgian societies. The town served as a political and religious hub for centuries. The geological formation is sandstone, a sedimentary rock, which allowed for its extensive carving.

Facts & Legends

A notable historical oddity is the discovery of a 3rd-century BCE pagan altar dedicated to the sun god, indicating the site's significant religious importance. Local legend suggests that the caves were once connected by a secret tunnel to the nearby city of Gori.
