Access is via the M4 highway, taking the South Beach exit. Ample paid parking is available on-site, with capacity for 1,200 vehicles. Public transport options include the Golden Mile bus route, which stops directly outside the park entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The concept for uShaka Marine World was developed in the late 1990s, with construction commencing in 2003 and opening in 2004. The park was built on reclaimed land that was previously part of the Durban harbor. The aquarium focuses on showcasing the diverse marine ecosystems of the Indian Ocean coastline, from the coral reefs of Sodwana Bay to the deeper waters off the coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include exploring the five main aquarium galleries (Ocean, Dolphin, Penguin, Seal, and Reptile). Visitors can participate in dolphin and seal shows, which occur at scheduled times. The adjacent water park, Wet 'n Wild, offers numerous slides and a surf pool. Snorkeling is not permitted within the aquarium tanks. The park also features a dolphin interaction program and a penguin feeding experience.

For outdoor activities, the months of April to September offer milder temperatures. The water park operates year-round, but is best enjoyed during warmer periods. High tide is not a factor for park access or activities.

Facts & Legends

The park's design intentionally incorporates elements of a shipwreck to create an immersive narrative. A local legend suggests that the "ghost" of a drowned sailor can sometimes be seen near the replica ship's bow during foggy mornings, though this is unverified.
