Vrelo Bosne, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
Vrelo Bosne is a public park and protected nature monument situated at the foothills of Mount Igman, approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo's city center. It encompasses the source of the Bosna River and is characterized by a network of springs, lakes, and islets.
Visual Characteristics
The park features a complex hydrological system of bubbling springs and turquoise streams connected by small wooden and stone bridges. The landscape is dominated by dense deciduous forests and lush meadows. The water is clear enough to support large populations of indigenous river trout and swans, which serve as the park's biological symbols.

Address: Velika Aleja, Ilidža, Sarajevo.
Transport: * Tram: Line 3 to the Ilidža terminus.
The Great Alley (Velika Aleja): From the Ilidža terminus, the park is accessed via a 3.5-kilometer straight avenue lined with 726 plane and chestnut trees.

Historical & Ecological Origin
Designated as a Nature Monument in 2006, the area spans 603 hectares.
Hydrology: The site is the primary karstic spring of the Bosna River, fed by underground waters from the Igman and Bjelašnica massifs.
Heritage: The Great Alley was planted during the Austro-Hungarian period (late 19th century). Many villas along the avenue represent the "Swiss style" and Neo-Moorish architecture of that era.
Roman Bridge: Located near the park (across the main road), this 16th-century Ottoman bridge was built using stones from original Roman ruins that once connected the area to the Roman settlement of Aquae Sulphurae.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swan Lakes: The central part of the park features several lakes inhabited by white swans and ducks.
Trout Watching: The clear streams allow for visibility of native fish species in their natural habitat.
Picnic Areas: Numerous benches and covered rest areas are distributed along the footpaths.
Restaurant "Labud": A traditional restaurant located in the center of the park, known for serving locally sourced river trout.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The park is well-maintained with paved and gravel walking paths, children's playgrounds, and public restrooms. 4G/5G cellular coverage is consistent. Temperatures in the park are typically 3–5°C lower than in the city center due to the dense forest canopy and moving water, making it a primary summer retreat.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (July–August): Ideal for escaping city heat; the shade and water provide natural cooling.
Autumn (October): Peak visual aesthetic as the chestnut and plane trees along the Great Alley change color.
Photography: Morning light is best for capturing the reflections in the calm spring pools.
