Zborov Castle, Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia, Europe

Zborov Castle, also known as Makovica, is a medieval fortification ruin situated on a high conical hill in the Busov mountains. It is located near the village of Zborov in the Bardejov District of northeastern Slovakia, approximately 110km northeast of Spišská Nová Ves.

Visual Characteristics

The ruins consist of massive stone perimeter walls, several defensive bastions, and the remains of a Gothic palace. The structure is built primarily from local sandstone and limestone, featuring distinctive Renaissance adaptations such as flared gun loops and reinforced artillery platforms. Much of the site is currently being stabilized, with exposed masonry cores and reconstructed wooden walkways integrated into the historic stone fabric.

Location & Access Logistics

The castle is located 10km north of Bardejov. Pedestrian access is via a marked yellow hiking trail starting from the center of Zborov village (30-45 minute ascent) or a red trail from the "Dlhá Lúka" district of Bardejov. Limited parking is available at the trailhead in Zborov. The nearest major rail and bus hub is in Bardejov, with frequent local bus connections to Zborov.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction began in the early 14th century to protect the trade route to Poland. It was originally a royal castle before being owned by the Cudar, Rozgonyi, and Rákóczi families. The site is part of a National Nature Reserve, characterized by ancient oak and beech forests and rare flora adapted to the steep, rocky slopes of the Carpathian flysch zone.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the extensive courtyard systems and view the restored "Gapon" bastion. The site offers views of the Polish border and the Low Beskids range. Informational panels detail the ongoing architectural conservation efforts. The area is a hub for the "Cesta hrdinov SNP" long-distance hiking trail.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The site is a managed ruin with no indoor visitor center or electricity. Portable toilets are occasionally available at the trailhead, but not at the castle summit. 4G cellular signal is available but intermittent due to the terrain. There are no food vendors at the site; visitors must bring water and supplies from Zborov or Bardejov.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for a visit is from April to October when trails are dry and accessible. Photography is optimal in the early morning to capture the mists rising from the Tepla river valley below. During the winter, the steep ascent can be hazardous due to ice on the exposed stone paths.

Facts & Legends

The castle was significantly damaged in 1684 during the suppression of the Thököly uprising by Imperial troops. Local legend claims the Rákóczi family hid a massive treasure in a secret well within the central keep, protected by a curse that would collapse the tunnels upon anyone attempting to retrieve the gold without the rightful heir's consent.
