Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town, South Africa, Africa
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) is a contemporary art museum located in the V&A Waterfront district of Cape Town, South Africa.
This institution houses a significant collection of 21st-century art from Africa and its diaspora, presented within a repurposed grain silo complex.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is a converted grain silo, featuring a cylindrical concrete tower with a height of approximately 57 meters. The exterior retains much of the original industrial aesthetic, with visible concrete surfaces. Internally, the museum's central atrium is a large, multi-story space carved out of the silo shafts, with exposed concrete walls and a distinctive arched ceiling formed by the silo tops. The exhibition spaces are designed with clean lines and neutral palettes to showcase the artwork.
Location & Access Logistics
Zeitz MOCAA is situated at the end of Pier 6, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. It is approximately 2.5 kilometers from the Cape Town Central Business District. Access is via the M6 (Nelson Mandela Boulevard) or the N1 highway, with specific signage for the V&A Waterfront. Parking is available in the adjacent V&A Waterfront parking garages, with rates applicable. Public transport options include MyCiTi bus routes that service the V&A Waterfront, with stops within walking distance of the museum. The nearest train station is Cape Town Station, approximately 2 kilometers away.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The building was originally theerexport grain silo, constructed in 1921 and completed in 1924. It was once the tallest building in South Africa. The conversion into Zeitz MOCAA was undertaken by the architectural firm Heatherwick Studio, with the museum opening in September 2017. The project involved excavating the interior of the concrete tubes to create the central atrium and exhibition galleries.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can explore permanent and temporary exhibitions of contemporary African art. The museum offers guided tours focusing on specific collections or themes. The rooftop terrace provides views of the city and harbor. The museum shop and restaurant are also accessible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available on multiple levels. Limited shaded areas are present within the museum's interior spaces. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available within the museum. Food and beverage options are available at the museum's restaurant and cafe, and numerous food vendors and restaurants are located within the surrounding V&A Waterfront complex.

Facts & Legends
The central atrium's design was inspired by the shape of a grain of corn, with the carved-out spaces resembling the kernels. The museum's collection is largely on loan from the Zeitz Collection, amassed by Jochen Zeitz, a prominent collector of contemporary African art.
