Mitchell, USA South Dakota, North America
Mitchell is an incorporated city and the seat of Davison County, situated in the James River Valley. Known as the home of the "World’s Only Corn Palace," it is defined by its agricultural heritage, its role as a regional educational hub for Dakota Wesleyan University, and its status as a primary stop for travelers on the Interstate 90 corridor.
Historical Timeline
Inhabited by the Arikara and later the Dakota Sioux. The area was home to a settled agricultural society as early as 1,000 AD. The modern town was founded in 1879 and named after Alexander Mitchell, President of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad. A critical historical event occurred in 1892 with the construction of the first Corn Palace, built to prove the fertility of South Dakota's soil and to challenge the city of Pierre for the state capital. While Mitchell lost the capital bid, the Corn Palace became a permanent global attraction. In the 20th century, the city solidified its position as a retail and manufacturing center for the southeastern plains.
