Aquarium of Genoa, Genoa, Italy, Europe
The Acquario di Genova is Italy's largest aquarium and the second largest in Europe. It is located at the Porto Antico (Old Port) of Genoa and is a major center for marine conservation and research.
Visual Characteristics
The facility is housed in a structure designed by architect Renzo Piano, which resembles a series of shipping containers stacked on a hull. The interiors feature massive tanks with floor-to-ceiling acrylic panels, allowing for an immersive "underwater" perspective. The Cetacean Pavilion, a 94-meter-long glass structure, allows visitors to view dolphins from both surface and underwater levels.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Ponte Spinola, 16, 16128 Genova.
Access: Located at the heart of the Porto Antico. It is a 10-minute walk from the Genova Piazza Principe train station.
Metro: Nearest stop is San Giorgio.
Entry: Ticket required. It is recommended to book fixed-date tickets online in advance to avoid long queues, especially during weekends and holidays.
Mobility: The entire aquarium is fully accessible to wheelchair users and strollers via elevators and ramps.
Historical & Engineering Origin
Inaugurated in 1992 as part of the "Expo '92" celebrations, the aquarium was built to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage. An engineering highlight is the Cetacean Pavilion (added in 2013), a massive concrete and glass structure partially submerged in the harbor, which was towed into position and sunk to its foundations.
Key Highlights
Cetacean Pavilion: Four open-air tanks housing a community of Bottlenose dolphins.
Shark Tank: Features various species, including grey sharks and nurse sharks, in a massive 1.2-million-liter tank.
Biodiversity Pavilion: Located inside a repurposed ship (Nave Italia) permanently moored at the pier; it includes a touch tank where visitors can pet stingrays.
The Biosphere: A separate but adjacent glass sphere (often bundled with tickets) containing a tropical rainforest ecosystem.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility has excellent 5G coverage. It includes a cafe/snack bar with harbor views, a gift shop, and restrooms. Lockers are available for a small fee. Given its central location, it is surrounded by the numerous dining and retail options of the Porto Antico district.
Best Time to Visit
Operating Hours: Generally 10:00–20:00 (weekdays) and 09:00–20:00 (weekends), though these vary by season.
Strategy: Visit on a weekday morning or late afternoon to avoid school groups and heavy tourist traffic.
Facts & Legends
The aquarium is involved in numerous European research projects, particularly regarding the reproduction of endangered species like the Mediterranean monk seal. It is home to approximately 12,000 specimens from 600 different species. Local maritime lore often links the modern port’s success to the "spirit of exploration" fostered by the aquarium’s educational mission.
