Bigo Lift, Genoa, Italy, Europe
The Bigo is a panoramic aerial lift and architectural monument located in Genoa's Porto Antico. Designed by architect Renzo Piano in 1992, it has become one of the city's modern landmarks.
Visual Characteristics
The structure resembles a massive white multi-armed crane, inspired by the traditional loading booms used in the shipyard industry. One of its arms supports the circular glass passenger cabin, which rises vertically and rotates 360 degrees. Other arms serve as structural supports for the membrane roof of the adjacent Piazza delle Feste.

Historical & Engineering Origin
Created for the Colombo '92 exhibition to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America. Its name, "Bigo," is the local term for the derricks used for loading and unloading cargo on ships. The lift serves as a functional demonstration of tension-structure engineering, utilizing steel cables to suspend the cabin and the nearby festival pavilion.
Key Highlights
The Ascent: The cabin rises to a height of 40 meters, providing a gradual rotation that ensures a full panorama.
Panoramic Views: Offers the best vantage point for viewing the dense layout of the medieval historic center, the Lanterna lighthouse, and the industrial shipyards simultaneously.
Multimedia Experience: The cabin is equipped with an audio system (available in multiple languages) that explains the history and landmarks visible during the rotation.
Infrastructure & Amenities
5G coverage is excellent throughout the pier. The base of the Bigo is surrounded by benches and waterfront cafes. It is a fully accessible attraction for wheelchair users.

Facts & Legends
The Bigo is not just a lift; it is a structural anchor for the entire Porto Antico renovation. It was designed to represent the city's transition from an industrial shipping hub to a cultural and tourist destination while honoring its maritime machinery heritage.
