The Domain was established as a public reserve in 1843, making it Auckland's oldest park. The land is part of the Auckland Volcanic Field, with Ōwairaka / Mount Albert being a scoria cone formed by volcanic activity approximately 28,000 years ago. The Auckland War Memorial Museum was constructed between 1920 and 1929, with later additions.
