British Airways i360, Brighton, United Kingdom, Europe
Brighton i360 (formerly British Airways i360) is a 162-meter (531-foot) observation tower located on the seafront of Brighton, United Kingdom. It stands at the landward end of the derelict West Pier.
Visual Characteristics
The structure consists of a slender, vertical steel column encased in a futuristic glass observation pod. The pod is a toroid (donut) shape, providing 360-degree views. It is ten times the size of a London Eye capsule and moves vertically up and down the tower. The base of the tower is integrated into a modern glass-and-steel beach-level building that incorporates reconstructed Victorian toll booths from the original West Pier.
Location & Access Logistics
The tower is located at Lower Kings Road (BN1 2LN).
Public Transport: Brighton Railway Station is 1.2km north. The Brighton & Hove buses (routes 1, 1A, 2, 5, 6) stop nearby on Western Road or the A259.
Road: Situated directly on the A259 (Kings Road).
Parking: The nearest facility is Regency Square Car Park, located directly opposite the tower underground.
Access: The site is fully accessible. The boarding ramp, the pod itself, and the beach-level heritage center are designed for wheelchair and stroller access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Opened in August 2016, the tower was designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the firm responsible for the London Eye. It was conceived as a "vertical pier" to replace the lost leisure utility of the West Pier. The tower holds a Guinness World Record for being the world's most slender dynamic tower, with a height-to-width ratio of 40:1. The site is situated on a shingle beach ecosystem, common to the Sussex coast.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Flight: A 25-minute gradual ascent to 138 meters (450 feet).
Nyetimber Sky Bar: Located inside the pod, serving local Sussex sparkling wine and refreshments during the flight.
Views: On clear days, the panorama extends to Beachy Head (east), the Isle of Wight (west), and the South Downs National Park (north).
Extreme Activities: The venue offers "iDrop" abseiling and "Walk 360" (walking on top of the pod) for an additional fee.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The beach-level building contains the West Beach Bar & Restaurant, a gift shop, and an exhibition space detailing the history of the West Pier. Public restrooms and baby-changing facilities are available in the base building. 5G cellular coverage is excellent.
Best Time to Visit
Open daily from 11:00. Sunset flights provide optimal lighting for photography of the Brighton skyline and the West Pier ruins. Clear, cold winter days often provide the highest visibility distances. Pre-booking online is recommended for lower rates and guaranteed time slots.
Facts & Legends
A verified engineering oddity is that the tower's damping system consists of liquid-filled tanks at the top to counteract sway in high winds. While no significant legends exist for this modern structure, its location directly aligns with the center-line of the historic West Pier, symbolically maintaining the Victorian "axis of fun."
